The evolution of the mass-metallicity relation in SDSS galaxies uncovered by astropaleontology

چکیده
We have obtained the mass-metallicity (M–Z) relation at different lookback times for the same set of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, using the stellar metallicities estimated with our spectral synthesis code starlight. We have found that this relation steepens and spans a wider range in both mass and metallicity at higher redshifts. We have modeled the time evolution of stellar metallicity with a closedbox chemical evolution model, for galaxies of different types and masses. Our results suggest that the M–Z relation for galaxies with present-day stellar masses down to 1010M⊙ is mainly driven by the history of star formation history and not by inflows or outflows.

The Cosmic Evolution of Metallicity from the SDSS Fossil Record
We present the time evolution of the stellar metallicity for SDSS galaxies, a sample that spans five orders of magnitude in stellar mass (10 − 10 M⊙). Assuming the Bruzual & Charlot (2003) stellar population models, we find that more massive galaxies are more metal-rich than less massive ones at all redshifts; the mass-metallicity relation is imprinted in galaxies from the epoch of formation. F...
متن کاملOn the Origin of the Mass-metallicity Relation for Grb Host Galaxies
We investigate the nature of the mass-metallicity (M -Z) relation for long gamma-ray burst (LGRB) host galaxies. Recent studies suggest that the M -Z relation for local LGRB host galaxies may be systematically offset towards lower metallicities relative to theM -Z relation defined by the general star forming galaxy (SDSS) population. The nature of this offset is consistent with suggestions that...
متن کاملOutliers from the Mass–metallicity Relation Ii: a Sample of Massive Metal-poor Galaxies from Sdss
We present a sample of 42 high-mass low-metallicity outliers from the mass–metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies. These galaxies have stellar masses that span log(M⋆/M⊙) ∼ 9.4 to 11.1 and are offset from the mass–metallicity relation by −0.3 to −0.85dex in 12+ log(O/H). In general, they are extremely blue, have high star formation rates for their masses, and are morphologically disturbe...
متن کاملThe Mass–metallicity Relation with the Direct Method on Stacked Spectra of Sdss Galaxies
The relation between galaxy stellar mass and gas-phase metallicity is a sensitive diagnostic of the main processes that drive galaxy evolution, namely cosmological gas inflow, metal production in stars, and gas outflow via galactic winds. We employed the direct method to measure the metallicities of ∼200,000 star-forming galaxies from the SDSS that were stacked in bins of (1) stellar mass and (...
متن کاملOn Extending the Mass-metallicity Relation of Galaxies by 2.5 Decades in Stellar Mass
We report 4.5 μm luminosities for 27 nearby (D . 5 Mpc) dwarf irregular galaxies measured with the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera. We have constructed the 4.5 μm luminosity-metallicity (L–Z) relation for 25 dwarf galaxies with secure distance and interstellar medium oxygen abundance measurements. The 4.5 μm L–Z relation is 12+log(O/H) = (5.78 ± 0.21) + (−0.122 ± 0.012) M[4.5], where M[4.5] is th...
